Zone Pyramids Nature Reserve on Lake Iseo
Zone Pyramids Nature Reserve on Lake Iseo

DESCRIPTION
Lake Iseo has always captivated visitors with the mountain ranges that surround and crown its vast expanse of blue water. But beyond the picturesque views that can be enjoyed along the lakeshore and from the numerous vantage points, the surrounding valleys conceal unexpected treasures. In the town of Zone in the province of Brescia, on the lake’s northeastern shore, the Piramidi di Zone Nature Reserve is certainly one of the most distinctive.
These are tall pyramids of earth and rock, reaching heights of up to 30 meters, which have formed over millennia primarily through water erosion. The spires are protected by enveloping “caps”—enormous erratic boulders that shield the underlying column from the effects of washout. If the boulder protecting it falls, the pyramid begins a rapid decline. You can admire these natural wonders by walking along a trail that winds through the nature reserve.
On a winter day dominated by a livid sky, I took this panoramic photo.
