In my opinion, one of the most relaxing and rewarding aspects of our relationship with Nature is simply observing it. Of course, many times I’m the first one to try to climb higher, to seek out an original vantage point—even if it involves a pretty strenuous hike. I’ve often asked myself what I’m looking for when I go to remote places in nature. Deep down, I just want to find a place far from people, from distractions—and even from myself, in a certain sense—that allows me to enjoy this extraordinary spectacle. I want to look, to feel, to let my senses be touched by the slow yet inexhaustible rhythm with which the great natural world moves.
Sometimes there can be two of us to savor this gift: sometimes a very close hiking companion—in this case, my wife Stefania.
Someone who understands just how precious certain silences are and shares with you the joy of the beauty that’s been bestowed upon you.
So one summer evening, even without climbing any mountains, Stefania and I found ourselves in silence at the edge of the small lake at the Lavazè Pass (1,808 m). With darkness now closing in all around us, the last rays of light on the Dolomites were reflected on the small body of water. From time to time, the bells of cows grazing in the pastures cut through the gentle sound of the evening breeze.
