Anthropogenic geometries adorn the hills in black and white
DESCRIPTION
Toward the end of a hot day in early October 2008, I was crossing a series of peaks in the Emilian Apennines. At one point, my attention was drawn to the slope of an adjacent mountain. Further down in the valley, a farm vehicle was tilling the soil slowly and steadily. The low evening light highlighted the pattern that had been woven into the mountainside. Like a patiently crafted embroidery, a crisp, distinct design took shape on the ground. I stopped to try to imagine how long that work had been going on: at least since early morning, I thought. Then I thought that, unlike what usually happens, this time man’s work on nature had created something beautiful and harmonious. So I used a long focal length and looked for a suitable vantage point from above to document this transformation. Using black and white allowed me to accentuate the graphic design.
