First light of day on the Mont Blanc massif and the Giant's Tooth
DESCRIPTION
There’s nothing quite like the first light of day caressing the highest peaks and the outlines of rocky ridges to make a mountain magical. The low-angle light reveals every tiny contour, gorge, and gully, allowing you to examine a face before tackling it. Where can you climb? How does the terrain unfold? It’s as if a flat map were taking shape, giving you the chance to touch and understand the terrain. But even if you don’t plan to climb those walls, the low-angle light has the advantage of enhancing the landscape, giving it a three-dimensional quality. So, on a summer morning in 2015 at 7:00 a.m., I photographed a section of the Mont Blanc massif with a long telephoto lens. The Dente del Gigante and its imposing ridge dominate a scene illuminated by the first light coming from the east toward the Val Ferret. The mountain reveals itself one peak at a time, showcasing all of its imposing complexity.
